The Whisper Game: Teaching Stemmatics’  ,

A description of how advanced students can be introduced to codicology, paleography, and editorial theory via an updating of the kindergarten game ‘the whisper game’, which will teach students the differences among facsimile, diplomatic, eclectic, and critical editions. Grindley uses five lines from Imaginatyf in PPl B and eight lines from Chaucer’s ‘Merchant’s Tale’. This entertaining essay concludes by stressing the importance of teaching students to be suspicious of edited texts, less wary of working with primary documents, and ready to encounter real medieval MSS.
