The Scribe of Rawlinson Poetry 137 and the Copying and Circulation of Piers Plowman.
This article identifies the scribe of Bodleian Library Rawlinson Poetry 137 of the A version (R) as the same copyist responsible for University College Oxford 142, a copy of the Prick of Conscience. Analysis of scribal signatures in the two manuscripts leads to the identification of the scribe as a vicar of Chichester Cathedral in the early fifteenth century. The remainder of the article explores the implications of this identification for the circulation and readership of the A version in the early fifteenth century.
