Some Medical Evidence on Langland’s Imaginatif

WL’s use of ymaginatif in the rare ME sense of “rational,” “intellectual,” “deliberative,” most probably derived from Avicenna, is paralleled in Bodley MS. Ashmole 1498, a ME medical compilatio written c. 1400. Fols. 65v-66r, presenting in tabular form Johannitius’s notion of a human being’s medical composition, departs from its source and follows Avicenna in defining ymaginatif as “ordinatyf, discretyf, composityf.”
