Title Background

Piers Plowman C. V. 86-87.

Piers Plowman C. V. 86-87.

Whereas B.14.38-50 quote Matthew 4:4 in its exact Vulgate form, yielding in translation “Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God,” the corresponding passage in C.5.84-88 splits the text over two lines of verse, with the effect of making solo a noun parallel to other ablatives pane and pabulo, and thus requiring a different translation, “Not from the soil does man live, nor in bread and in food.”
