WL’s women, sometimes though not exclusively stereotypical, are often founded upon the orthodox categories of antiferninist satire. But WL likewise seems to understand the plight of women and occasionally gives them prestigious roles normally accorded to men. “In fact, he seems to be friendlier towards women much more constantly than Geoffrey Chaucer.”
