Literature and Drama.

The gospel of the A text is social, even secular; by the end of this version, WL has thrust himself into five interrelated difficulties which would be at issue in the Reformation: the contrast between the alienation from God as a result of the Fall and particular sins; the forgiveness sent by Truth and the signs of it handled by the Church; the contrast of work and prayer, action and contemplation; the general problem of ethics; and the problem of justice and mercy. The B text is WL’s New Testament, a reconciliation of Law and Mercy.
